Quassia Bark (Bitterwood) is well known for its intensely bitter properties and has long been used as a natural digestive tonic to support appetite and healthy digestion. Known as one of nature’s most potent bitters, Quassia helps to stimulate appetite, encourage the natural production of digestive juices and bile, and regulate the entire digestive system.
This powerful herb is also valued for its ability to help eliminate intestinal worms and, when applied externally, can be beneficial for the scalp and skin to help to treat lice. Beyond its internal and topical uses, Quassia serves as a conscious botanical insecticide and mosquito repellant, a natural way to deter unwanted pests in the home or garden without harsh chemicals.
Before using, wash the bark thoroughly to remove any dust or residue.
To prepare a Quassia tonic, add about ½ to 1 teaspoon of to 1 cup (250 ml) of water, bring to a gentle boil, and let it simmer for 5–10 minutes. Strain and allow to cool slightly before drinking. Consume ¼ to ½ cup at a time, preferably 15–30 minutes before meals to support healthy digestion. Because of its intense bitterness and potency, start with small amounts and adjust as needed, a little goes a long way.
